How did his interest in Papua arise?
From 1952 to 1960 I lived with my parents in Hollandia. My first school memories then lie in Papua. Until the fifth grade I was in school DOCK V. We were with 54 students, all with different ethnic backgrounds. However, hardly any Papuans lived near Dock V.

Why is education so important?
Education is a universal right. It pains me to see how children are not given the chance to learn because for example they belong to a marginalized group. Children who attend school have more social opportunities and therefore are less prone to be economic dependant. Moreover education increases self-awareness and self-esteem of people. Through my career in adult education, I know that you’re never too old to learn!

What does education for Papua?
In Papua education means that Papuans have the chance to take charge of their own lives. Also, it helps in the development of the country. Expertise in the areas of healthcare, technology and agriculture may increases capacity building of larger and smaller communities.
