Mama Katarina is the oldest woman in the sewing class. She is part of the first generation of Asmatters who moved to Merauke in the ‘80s, looking for work and a better future. Mama Katarina knows better than anyone the best places to fish or grow vegetables. Every day she goes into town with other women to search through junk piles for useful products or food. In a poor community like that of the Asmatters, it is quite rare to own property. Only clothing is seen as something that is ‘truly your own’. Thanks to the sewing class, mama Katarina will soon be able to make her own products and maybe even sell them.
This story is part of a series that introduces you to six Asmat women who take a sewing class in Merauke. The initiator is Edo Mote, who has set up various projects for the Asmat community in deprived areas with his foundation Papua Mandiri 2050.
