More and more international companies are investing in Papua. Therefore knowledge of English is very important and even more so in the future. The courses offered in the capital Jayapura are aimed at young adults. A child’s brain however picks up a foreign language much easier.
Hapin supports this educational project which focuses on English lessons for children between the ages of 8 and 11. Initiator is Yenni Salosa. She studied in Wageningen and has been a volunteer for Hapin in the Netherlands.
Within the course there is room for twenty girls and ten boys. The group is divided in half in order for the children to receive as much as individual attention as needed. Because the students are young a curriculum has been invented that focuses on learning by playing. Through board games, music and sports the children learn English. In this way, children will discover that learning can be fun. Hopefully that will open doors for them in the future.
