Project Description

fish farm Mujair Nila PapuaPlace: Demta

Year: 2016

The Demta district is located about 100 km east of the capital Jayapura. The area lies between the sea and the beaches between Sarmi and Jayapura. The region is ideal for sea fishing and fish farms.

The fish farm Mujair Nila is active in Demta. The members of this group of fish farmers come from 7 different kampongs from the district. They have joined forces and enthusiastically started a cooperative, collaborative project with the aim of generating income for their families.

In addition, they also want to show the community that it is possible to become independent of others through collective effort. The participants jointly manage and maintain the fish ponds in which the freshwater fish is farmed. It is a labor intensive process.

Fish farming must be protected against diseases and the quality and temperature of the water must be permanently monitored. After 3-6 months, the fish is large and mature enough for sale. Market sales are also made by members. The intention is to involve more people in these activities and make a living from them.
