Project Description

Year: 2024
Amount: € 3.000,-
Where: Jayapura

This project is a collaboration between Wilde Ganzen and the Hapin – Papua Support Foundation. Every euro raised for the women in Jayapura will be doubled by Wilde Ganzen!

Daily life can be extremely challenging for women in Papua, especially for those who have moved from villages to the city in search of a better life. Competition with transmigrants in the labor market is fierce, and Papuans frequently face racism and discrimination. At home, women often endure physical and emotional abuse. Despite being a cornerstone of their families and communities, they rarely get the opportunity to develop their skills.

For over 25 years, the three-person team of our partner Yawu Papua has been committed to supporting women in Jayapura and its surrounding areas, particularly mothers from the Hubula, Moni, and Mee tribes. Yawu Papua was founded to continue the social work of the renowned pastor Van Lieshout.

‘Yawu’ means ‘to work’ in the Wamena language, and this project embodies that spirit. Soon, 75 women will start their own businesses. Participants will learn to bake bread and receive essential equipment, including an oven. The bread will be sold at the local market. They will also receive guidance in creating business plans and budgets. This empowers them to earn their own income and grow in independence. Most importantly, they will build the confidence to advocate for themselves.

This project was shaped by conversations with the women about their needs and aspirations. Earning an income not only helps them take control of their lives but also positively impacts their children and the wider community. The money earned can be invested in education and healthcare for their families. Additionally, these women can inspire and support others in their community, creating a ripple effect of empowerment that benefits society as a whole.
