Irma & pak Neles of Yawu Papua

Year: 2024
Budget: €2.000
Location: Jayapura

The living conditions of women in Papua are not always easy. They are often responsible for the care and maintenance of their families. At the same time, they  have a disadvantaged position compared to men, lacking opportunities to develop their talents and skills, which can lead to tensions in the family.

Our partner in Jayapura, Yawu Papua, helps Papuans, particularly women, improve their socio-economic position. The staff consists of young, motivated individuals from the tribal areas of Hubula, Keerom, and Moni-Migani which are Yawu Papua’s operational area. Therefore they are well-acquainted with the living situations of their communities and can effectively guide activities.

This year, with financial support from Hapin, Yawu Papua will organize entrepreneurship training for Papuan women, aiming to teach participants basic skills. They will not only receive tips and tricks on starting a business but also learn skills to manage their households financially and organizationally, covering topics such as health, nutrition, parenting, and assistance with their children’s education, thereby improving the living conditions of the entire family. The opportunity to start a small-scale enterprise helps them attain a stable income.

Yawu Papua will conduct the training at six different locations in the Jayapura region to practically and socially support women while building their confidence. It is expected that some women will receive assistance in actually starting a business afterward. With increased control over their living situations and income, women can invest in the education and well-being of their families, as well as help other women in the community progress, fostering a powerful movement benefiting the entire society.
