Hapin supports young Papuans who have proven to be qualified to successfully complete a secondary or higher vocational education or university. In addition, the individual motivation and commitment are critically examined. Preference will be given to students who come from socio-economically weak regions in Papua and whose family, village or community is unable or insufficiently able to provide financial support.
Demi Nawipa
Who are you?
I am 31 years old and I was born in Paniai (Wisselmeren). My mother died when I was born and I lost my father when I was 13 years old. I do not have any siblings. My family took care of me. After high school I studied Geology in Papua and in 2012 I continued that study in Yogyakarta at the Institute of Science and Technology AKPRIND, the best qualified college in Indonesia. With the great support of Hapin I graduated on September 28 as a geologist and I can now proudly call myself an engineer.
What are you going to do now?
Learn better English. That is why I am taking an English course until May 2020. After that I would like to do my master’s at the University of Utrecht or in Ohio, America. But if that doesn’t work, I will do that in Bandung at Gadjah Mada University.
What is your dream for the future?
After completing my master’s, I want to focus on environmental research, specifically in the area’s where groundwater is used as drinking water. That is not always justified now. Last year, many small children in Asmat, Yahukimo, Wagete and Nduga died as a result of poisoned groundwater. The research with which I graduated dealt with the same problems in an area in East Java.
