Project Description
Demi Nawipa, a geologist in training at the University of Yogyakarta, sent Hapin a cry for help. There was no more money for his (expensive) graduation research. Attempts to get money elsewhere had failed. Demi comes from a poor environment in Nabire (Papua). He hardly has any family. He lost his parents at a young age and he has no siblings.
The first years he studied with a scholarship from Hapin, but due to the higher tuition fees and research costs after that, he was no longer eligible for further funding. The Faculty Council and its teachers reported to us in an urgent letter of recommendation that Demi is a talented and hardworking student. This gave us every reason to come to his aid. He received 1500 euros for his graduation. In response, Demi sent us the email below.
Since 2014 I am now studying in Yogyakarta. I took all study subjects and completed them all in 2015. I therefore wanted to graduate in 2016, but had to postpone it because there was no more money. Therefore, many thanks to you that it will now work. We as Papuans have received so-called autonomy from Jakarta, but I never received a cent for my studies from the central government. I am currently working on the final research and will be able to graduate in February 2019. Many thanks to Hapin and the people who support Hapin!
