Project Description

fishmongers papuaPlace: Jayapura

Year: 2016

One of Hapin’s ongoing projects is the microcredit project. Organized groups of women receive small loans and invest that in (small-scale) entrepreneurship. The loans are repaid with the profits made. This project started in 2010 with two moms on the market in Abepura. This was such a great success that 58 women and two men are now supported in three different markets in the Jayapura region (capital of Papua).

One of the conditions to participate in this program is to take and complete an accounting course. Five years later, there is clear growth of the companies and the entrepreneurs are even able to save and make follow-up investments.

A number of fishmongers on the market have asked Hapin for support in developing a method to make the smoked fish have a longer shelf life and make sales a little more attractive. Smoking fish originated as a preservation method. In some countries the fish was dried in the open air, but in Papua they do this over a fire.
However, the eye also wants something. The fish is currently wrapped in newspaper and the ladies are sitting on the floor with their merchandise. They would like to purchase six refrigerated display cabinets and a different type of packaging material. In addition, a logistics service must be developed that brings the display cabinets to and from the market.

They have asked Hapin to contribute € 5,100 and Hapin has honored this. With this amount they hope to double their turnover and expand the customer base.
