The Port Numbay medical team is eager to help refugees in Nduga.
In the spring of 2019, thousands of men, women and children fled from the violence of the Indonesian army in the hunt for rebels in this region. Since then, they have been staying in makeshift camps in and around Wamena, the capital of Jayawijaya province, the interior of Papua. They dare not return to their villages, nor do they feel safe in the camps as a result of the patrols and intimidation of the armed soldiers. They shut themselves off to the outside world. The recent violent disturbances in and outside Wamena made the situation even more terrifying for the already traumatized refugees. Hapin tried to get in touch with them. This was partly successful, but it takes patience, time and tact to properly organize the relief work. The authorities do not always cooperate. The security risks are high. Hapin previously decided, together with the Rajori Foundation, to provide financial support to the Port Numbay medical team that has a structural assistance program for these displaced Papuans. We hope that this Port Numbay team can really get started in the coming weeks. You can still contribute to this project.
