Project Description
Welly Manufandu is no stranger to Hapin. As a competent travel guide, she has guided dozens of foreign tourists to the most beautiful places in Papua in recent years, but has also introduced them to the world of Papuans in remote mountain villages. Now that revenues have declined due to the turmoil of last autumn and the current corona crisis, she saw new opportunities. Welly has been working on agro-hydroponics for quite some time. Vegetables are not grown in the ground, but through a system in which minerals and nutrients are supplied to the plant in a water solution.
In addition, Welly is working on an organic chicken farm as well. Once the chickens lay eggs, they are sold to supply eggs. The vegetables and eggs are needed for eateries, hotels and restaurants. She also wants to share her knowledge and experience and train local communities in Sentani, Wamena, the Raja Ampat islands and Biak to learn this sustainable economic activity. It is a win-win situation for all participants. Welly presented Hapin with a thought through and realistic business plan for these activities. Hapin has provided financial support for the purchase of the chicks, the transport, the feed, the vaccines and the construction of safe and spacious pens. If it goes as Welly has estimated, she will have earned back a large part of that investment within 5 months.
