Many children in Papua leave school prematurely because they do not feel at home or safe. Desi, the driving force behind Papua GLD, has made it her mission to create a nurturing learning environment for children and youths. Under her leadership, a dedicated team of volunteers teaches reading and writing to both school dropouts and students who need extra tutoring.

Papua GLD not only focuses on young children but also on students who need extra guidance or advice. Desi and her team’s approach goes beyond traditional education: these children and young people learn critical thinking, how to ask questions, and develop social skills. This is essential for shaping a new generation that can and wants to actively contribute to the future of Papua.

Despite the good organization, Papua GLD is still missing one crucial element: its own building. This learning center is needed to accommodate students, train volunteers, and house the office. With contributions from Hapin, materials such as cement, stones, and zinc can be purchased, and skilled workers can be hired. The learning center will enable Papua GLD to provide an even safer and more stable learning environment for more children and young people in Sorong.
