“Education is the key to liberating people from their position. Without education one becomes helpless, a slave to the environment.” Maria Baru is a freelance journalist from Cengkeh, a village near Sorong. She is concerned about the young generation, who she believes is becoming increasingly passive and unmotivated towards the environment. This cannot always simply be attributed to these young people themselves. Lack of good reading and writing skills cuts them off from the world around them.
Maria decided not to leave it at that and built a community of young people who share her vision on education. She founded the Komunitas Fenia Meroh Bergerak foundation and opened a reading café where young people can practice reading and writing. But also being able to discuss current issues with each other. Because, Maria says, education is more than going to school, sitting still and hearing stories. You can learn anywhere and everyone is a teacher.
The foundation will soon start a curriculum of several months. Lessons in reading and writing alternate with discussion groups about current affairs, such as nature conservation and gender. In this way, discrimination is not only discussed between Papuans and others, but also between men and women. Young people from all over the region are invited to participate. Maria: “We continue to train young people in reading, writing and discussing. So that we become independent, creative and critical young people who better understand the world around us.”
The budget from Hapin will be used to invite lecturers and to purchase a projector, screen, printer, books and office supplies.
