Inspiring college world

Kana Sani, featured student on GrantGesture, is studying in Physiotherapy at the Academy of Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) in Jakarta. Now in the 5th semester, Kana is doing her internship in the university’s hospital in east Jakarta. Kana will focus on cases of neurology. Many Papuans, varying from young to old suffer from neurological disorders. Usually they don’t receive any treatment and are suffering until the moment they die. Moreover young generations of Papuans should get nerve stimulus during the pregnancy and in their early ages to boost brain development and create intelligent generations.

According to Kana, the science of Physiotherapy is very important for society. Physiotherapy can help avoid and treat many health-related problems in order to benefit our social life, our psychology, education and work routines.

An active student

Kana always participates actively, in the classroom as well as outside. When Kana faces problems with her study, she will first try to figure it out herself. Sometimes with help of the internet or eventually by discussing the matter with her classmates.

In the beginning Kana encountered some problems with finding a study partner because they are non-Papuans. But Kana did not give up. She dared to step out of her comfort zone and mingle with her fellow students. Now they hang out and study together. She even joined some organizations at the campus and holds important positions there:

  1. Kana has joined the Choir of UKI and she is the Chair of Coordinators. They are now busy preparing the Choir for the National Church Choir singing competition on the 29th of September. They practice every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The event itself will be held in UKI as this year’s host. So they cannot loose in this ‘home-game’ right?!
  2. Kana is the Secretary of the Student Organization of Physiotherapy Academy
  3. Kana is active in the Student Prayer Fellowship Kana, she also writes in the monthly bulletin of “Sahabat Doa” (Prayer’s Friends)

Her message to other Papuan students

  • Don’t give up and walk away from challenges. Always find new challenges and conquer them.
  • Do not focus solely on your academic life, do follow one other campus activity of your interest to improve skill/talent.
  • Be involved in an organization and make friends with other Indonesians, not active in Papuan student organisations only. This is to broaden our horizon.
  • Papua is a chosen nation of God, provided with a very beautiful unique skin colour, not to be ashamed of and not as a reason to keep the distance with other people (Indonesians).
