Hapinmedewerker-Reinier-de-Lang-met-Nova-SeserayStarting from July 1st this year, Nova Seseray entered the service of Hapin as a consultant. She is responsible for the scholarship program and regularly visits the students personally to monitor the progress of their study and to keep up to date with their personal life. Nova is also the link between Hapin Nederland and local NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) and assesses project applications at local level and submits them to Hapin if they meet the approval criteria.

Nova would like to introduce herself to you.

“My name is Novata Seseray and I am a Papuan woman. I am proud to work as a consultant for Hapin and see it as an excellent opportunity for me to do something for my people during this time of globalization and change. Papua is a rich country full of raw materials. There is a lot of talent among the people. Yet many of my countrymen are intoxicated by the government that offers all kinds of jobs and facilities to keep the people calm and dependent. The Papuans lose their motivation, creativity and self-reliance! Therefore it makes sense that the transmigrants (non-Papuans from other islands) seize the opportunities on the labor market and start doing business. I want to contribute to reversing that mindset and encouraging entrepreneurial Papuans to help their villages and communities flourish and to nominate talented students for a scholarship. That is my motivation to work for Hapin.”

We part with the Hapin Papua team. The team has decided to continue as an independent and financially independent organization in Papua as of January 1, 2020. A brave step. The structural support for wages and operational costs from the Netherlands will discontinue. The team is free to (continue to) submit project applications to Hapin Nederland. She focuses in particular on the microcredit program for the market women of Jayapura and the surrounding area. Microcredits teach women to do business independently and generate an income for further investment and raising the standard of living for their families. There is money to send the children to school, go to the doctor and buy enough food. Hapin wants to continue to support this successful program in the future, provided that the project conditions are of course met. We wish this young team the best of luck.
