Mention the name of Dr. F.C. Kamma on Papua and many elderly people will show a happy face. The cultural anthropologist / theologian F.C. Kamma (1906-1987) is still a household name on Papua. His familiarity with and love for Papuans made him one of them. Kamma was therefore called “the white Papua” by the locals. He was an expert on the myths, the stories that lived among the Papuans about, for example, the origin of the world. In 1992, five years after Kamma’s death, the working group “Friends of the Yayasan F.C. Kamma was founded, which was converted into the F.C. Kamma.
From the funds that were collected, girls’ boarding schools were built in Sorong and Waigeo, where hundreds of girls received good guidance and training over the years. In addition, the “Rie Kamma Study Fund” was created separately, from which the training for tens of underprivileged Papuan girls was financed. The F.C. Kamma foundation decided to discontinue on December 31, 2019. A difficult but inevitable decision by the board. The work became too much of a burden for the majority of older board members, who have spent many years making this their life’s work and who have had such a strong connection with the people of Papua. The F.C. Kamma decided to transfer the remaining funds to Hapin as of 1 January 2020 and to integrate the funds from the Rie Kamma study fund with the Hapin scholarship program. Hapin is very grateful for the trust of the board of F.C. Kamma .
