Choosing to pursue law wasn’t a casual decision for Anjelly. She’s driven by a desire to comprehend Indonesia’s legal framework better. She’s troubled by the scarcity of female lawyers, especially of Papuan heritage. In her hometown of Sorong, there are no female (Papuan) lawyers at all. And yet there are many cases of (sexual) violence against women in Papua. Anjelly sees that women who are represented by men in court often feel uncomfortable. When questioned about sensitive topics by men, they do not dare to give an honest answer.
As a female Papuan lawyer, Anjelly is determined to advocate for marginalized communities deprived of justice by the state. She’s committed to defending those denied the opportunities she’s been fortunate to receive. Guided by her family motto,
“We have the opportunity to positively change our own lives, and therefore those of others,” she’s resolute in her mission.
