Isak (22) is well on his way with his medical training. Recently he successfully completed his bachelor’s degree. Now he only has two more years to go. For that he needs a financial boost. Isak, who comes from the island of Biak, approached Hapin for this. Read his personal introduction and you will understand why we welcome him to our scholarship program.

As a child I dreamed of becoming a doctor one day. That ambition came in reach when I was able to study Medicine at Cenderawasih University in Jayapura after high school. I learned a lot in the four-year bachelor’s degree. In addition to the theoretical education, I also enjoyed the experimental research and the practice of social skills. The world of healthcare and medicine fascinated me. But what became especially clear to me is that the Papuans have a great need for doctors who understand their world and way of thinking, in short Papuan doctors.

The next two years I will focus on the clinical phase of my training. I will do a number of internships and some in different hospitals in Jayapura. It is my heart’s desire to specialize in Pediatrics after graduating as a medical doctor. In this way I can contribute to the improvement of health care in my beloved Papua. And who knows, maybe in the future we will be able to work with a group of Papuan paediatricians in areas where there are hardly any medical facilities.

My parents did what they could with their limited income to make my studies possible. But now I can’t and don’t want to bother them anymore. They have 3 more children going to school who also cost money and the cost of living is getting higher and higher. With a number of side jobs and the support of two other study funds (which only applied to the bachelor phase) I got to where I am now. I am a grateful person.
