Project Description

Year: 2023
Amount: € 2.000,-
Where: Manokwari

The coastal areas around Manokwari are in great danger. Bays are polluted by accumulating piles of washed-up debris and coral reefs are damaged by the use of bombs and trawls in fishing. Essential plants that protect the coastline, such as mangrove, often do not survive degradation. The Ketapang Dive Community (KDC) in Manokwari focuses on developing submarine parks to protect and renew this precious underwater world.

New corals are grown in so-called coral nurseries to replace the old, damaged corals. Nesting baby turtles are also tracked down, collected and protected. Finally, new mangrove areas will be created. That is delicate work: mangrove seeds are fragile and planting in the wrong season can hinder good growth. Fortunately, the volunteers of KDC already have several years of experience. The working area of KDC is not only attractive to tourists who like to dive, but now also functions as a research location for scientists.

KDC is very aware that good education and a growing awareness of environmental conservation among the local population are essential to their work. That is why she regularly organizes activities for the area, including large-scale cleaning campaigns on the beach. We are happy to be able to mean something for the precious and vulnerable nature in Papua in collaboration with this partner.
