Coffee from Papua
Description
94 coffee farmers take the next step in entrepreneurship
A New Step Forward
In the remote Paniai district, dozens of Papuan farmers are working with heart and soul to build a sustainable future in coffee cultivation. After years of planting, nurturing, and waiting, their hard work is beginning to bear fruit—literally: the first coffee cherries are turning red.
The farmers are united in a local cooperative. With support from Hapin, a drying greenhouse was built and machines were purchased to hull and process the coffee cherries. These facilities are being used with great enthusiasm. But to actually bring coffee to the market, additional resources are needed.
What’s Needed?
Thanks to your support, we can invest in tools and materials for processing Arabica coffee: packaging, labels, a sealing and vacuum machine, and other practical equipment. Funds will also be used to purchase ripe coffee cherries from the farmers, providing them with immediate income. With proper tools and market access, the farmers can process and sell their own coffee—from cherry to package.
About the Initiators
The cooperative now has 94 members. For them, this project is about more than just coffee. It represents an opportunity for economic independence and pride in a local product. Young farmers are also joining. They are mentored by experienced members and are gradually building a sustainable source of income for their families.
The ambition is clear: quality coffee from Paniai should find its way to customers beyond the region. In the future, the farmers hope to learn about quality control (the so-called Q-processes) and participate in coffee events. This will help grow both their skills and their professional network.
