Computer training for 150 students in Merauke: in action against digital inequality

Send in an application, prepare a school report, online banking, read the newspaper or advertise your company. Just a few examples of situations in which a computer is necessary. That is no different for Papuans than for us. But you also need skills to be able to use a computer. That is why Hapin supports various initiatives of local partners that teach Papuans the much-needed digital skills. Previously in Jayapura and the surrounding area, and now also in the southern city of Merauke. This year, more than 150 students are going to follow a course of their choice.

Description

In Merauke we often work together with local partner Papua Mandiri Sentosa 2050 (PMS), of which former Hapin student Edo Mote is the initiator. His goal is to prepare Papuan youth for a paid job through this computer training. And that is much needed! Research shows that digital skills have a positive effect on the learning outcomes of children. And having digital skills is an important condition for being able to keep up with society. The benefits are visible both online and ‘offline’: for example, children and youth with digital skills have more self-confidence.

In order to reach the right participants, Edo has started a collaboration with Polytechnic Yasanto. At this school one can learn a profession such as electrician or car mechanic. Because the school does not have a room where computers and laptops can be safely stored, the training is organized at a PMS location. The training topics fit in well with today’s needs. There is a course MS Office, graphic design, video editing and web design. All courses will be offered four times this year, so that each time a new group of about 40 people can participate.

Hapin’s budget will be used for a trainer’s fee and the purchase of software. But also to convert the course into a certified training, so that the participants will soon have a recognized diploma.
